Sanctions were supposed to stop China's semiconductor industry. The opposite happened.
Trading curbs on high-speed chips and chipmaking gear were imposed on US and European companies selling to Chinese firms. How Xi Jinping’s authoritarianism is killing China’s economy | Business Beyond
China’s economy has been flashing red on various fronts for the past few years. A severe property crisis and the struggle to emerge from strict pandemic restrictions are routinely blamed for problems ranging from deflation to sluggish growth. But in this episode of Business Beyond, we ask if there are more fundamental reasons behind the world’s second biggest economy’s malaise. Under Xi Jinping, the Chinese Communist Party has become more controlling than at any stage in the past four decades. Does authoritarianism place a cap on economic growth? In this episode we ask if Xi's desire for control at all costs is the main reason why so many people, both within China and outside of it, have lost faith in a global economic powerhouse’s capacity to bounce back.
And a special request to our vie...

Is China selling off its US Treasury and dollar bonds? It's complicated.
A deep analysis of China's US dollar reserve holdings reveals that their total reserves are basically unchanged over the past 10 years.
However, China regulators are moving reserves from US custodians to European ones, and are increasing their purchases of Agencies, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The change in custodial arrangements has profound implications for China's political risk management. What's more, it enables their SAFE officials to obscure their central banking operations abroad.
Their investment shift from Treasury paper to Agencies means they will be picking up extra interest income totaling hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Surprisingly, risk profiles for these assets are falling, despite aggressive Federal Reserve tightening.

Trading curbs on high-speed chips and chipmaking gear were imposed on US and European companies selling to Chinese firms. The objective was to deny China the latest tech in semiconductors, and especially the equipment needed build their own chips. By strictly enforcing export restrictions, it was believed that China would struggle to build 10-nanometer semiconductors.
But in 2023, Chinese companies introduced a 7-nanometer chip, which immediately was a boon to Huawei's Mate-60 sales, and drove down demand for Apple devices in China.
In early 2024, China announced two production lines for 5-nm chips.
How did Chinese companies make quantum jumps in semiconductor engineering, despite the sanctions? The Investors Business Daily and others, make a case that the sanctions themselves are the reason. The imposition of sanctions spurred Chinese innovation and technology advances that would have been unnecessary otherwise.
Worse, China is now in a strong competitive position to export their own new, fast chips, at a fraction of the cost offered by Western and Japanese chipmakers.

https://wn.com/Is_China_Selling_Off_Its_US_Treasury_And_Dollar_Bonds_It's_Complicated.
